Ryland is an author with a unique Southern flare wrought from his humble beginnings in rural Alabama. His natural, unencumbered prose and shadowy Southern style have made him a fan favorite. His work has been called “In the vein of M. Night Shyamalan and Alfred Hitchcock.”
His first novel was published in 2020 when Souls Harbor was released by Gnat Smoke Press. Since then, he has published a collection of short stories Southern Gothic and a young adult gothic romance Shatter. In 2022, his third novel The Man with No Eyes was published by Moonshine Cove Press, and later in the year a fourth novel Peripheral was released by World Castle Productions. In 2023 World Castle published The Unkindness of Ravens which was a finalist for the Silver Falchion for best Southern Gothic Novel as well as The Muck. He also has a novella, The Reality of Dreams and a second collection, Children of a Despicable Fate. His latest novel Three Nights at the Jupiter climbed to #1 in New Releases in American Horror when it released in the spring of 2024. In early 2025, his novel Family Tree will be released.
John has also published fourteen shorter works in various literary journals such as Otherwise Engaged, The Writer’s Magazine, The Eldritch Journal, The Chamber Magazine, Bewildering Stories, and The Birmingham Arts Journal, among others. His work also appears in anthologies published by Hell Bound Books and Into The Void Books and Red Cape Publishing. His work also appears on Spotify on Graveyard Grimm Radio.
